Opened in 1999 as the Millennium Stadium, it is best known for its fully retractable roof — one of only a handful of fully covered stadiums in Europe at this capacity — which allows night matches and concerts to be staged in any weather. For EURO 2028 the pitch will be converted to a football-specific layout and the stadium is expected to host four group-stage matches as Wales' sole host venue. The ground is unusual for a major stadium in that it sits directly in the city centre, within a five-minute walk of Cardiff Central station.
